3432 - SICK LEAVE BANK

The Dickinson-Iron Intermediate School District (DIISD) shall establish a Sick Leave Bank to provide additional sick leave to employees facing catastrophic illness or injury to themselves or an immediate family member. All employees of the Dickinson-Iron Intermediate School District shall be eligible to participate in the Sick Leave Bank Program, subject to the following provisions:

 A.In order to participate in the Sick Leave Bank Program, an employee must have completed one (1) year of service in the District and contributed one (1) day to the program. No more than one (1) day per employee may be contributed to the Bank.

 B.An employee may borrow from the Sick Leave Bank provided s/he has a specific need, due to extended illness or injury, for more sick leave days than said employee has accumulated.

 C.In order to participate in the Sick Leave Bank, an employee must have exhausted all leave days.

 D.The Sick Leave Bank will be created through the voluntary, confidential contributions of District employees.

 E.An employee wishing to make use of the Sick Leave Bank must make written application to the Superintendent using the approved form. All applications will remain strictly confidential.

 F.An employee may request to borrow no more than fifteen (15) days from the Sick Leave Bank at one time. Additional requests may be made to the governing committee as need indicates, but at no time may an employee have an existing debt of more than thirty (30) days in a fiscal year to the sick leave bank.

 G.All days borrowed from the Sick Leave Bank by the affected employee must be paid back to the District at the minimum rate of five (5) days per contract year from the employee's annual accumulation.

 H.If the employee terminates employment with the District, all borrowed Sick Leave Bank days must be paid back at the employee's current daily rate of pay per day borrowed including FICA and retirement.

 I.If an employee is indebted to the School District for unearned sick leave at the time s/he terminates his/her employment, the District shall have the right to deduct the value of same from the final payments due to said employee.

 J.The Sick Leave Bank will be governed by a committee consisting of one (1) Director/Superintendent or designee and one (1) employee from each of the District's four (4) departments and one (1) Board member.

 K.In most circumstances, an employee must submit an application for participation to the Sick Leave Bank five (5) days prior to exhausting all sick and personnel leave.
