8450.01 - PEDICULOSIS (HEAD LICE)
Students with confirmed cases of pediculosis will be prohibited from attending school until approval for readmission has been granted. Approval will be given when the county nurse, building principal and/or his/her designee has determined the student to be lice free and/or the danger (nits) to others no longer exists.
It is the responsibility of the school office to:
| A. | Notify parents if their child is to be excluded from school. | ||
| B. | To provide information to the parents for dealing with a pediculosis problem. | ||
| C. | Check housemates of the infected student that are in the school and also classmates if the situation warrants. | ||
| D. | Infected students will be checked until they have been nit free for two (2) weeks. | ||
| E. | If the student is not nit free upon returning to school, the principal and/or his/her designee has the right to send the child back home. |

The parent or legal guardian will be responsible for: |

A. Treating the infected child with lice shampoo and picking out all remaining nits before sending the student back to school.
| B. | Requesting and obtaining classroom make-up work. | ||
| C. | The first five (5) days of absence will be excused, but additional absence days will be unexcused. |
After four (4) weeks of little or no progress with the family or the child misses ten (10) school days, the school may file a complaint of child neglect with the Department of Human Services and/or the Defiance County Prosecutor’s Office.
