2110 - STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY
We believe that every learner should have available to him/her a comprehensive, varied, and sequential program of curricula grounded in the fundamental skills of reading, oral and written communication, and mathematics. Because our age is one of great technological, social, and scientific change, education should prepare learners for a future which is unknown and unpredictable. Increasingly more difficult learning expectancies should parallel the learner's mastery of fundamental concepts and objectives which reflect his/her increasing awareness of decision-making and problem-solving situations.
We believe that schools are a part of life as well as a preparation for life. The instructional program should accept responsibility for the learner's continued development morally, socially, emotionally, culturally, and physically, as well as academically.
Education plays a vital role in preserving, perpetuating, and improving the systems of life, government, and economy of the United States of America. The differences in culture, race, religious beliefs, and ethnic backgrounds, compounded by the individual talents, skills, and capabilities of all Americans have made us a strong society.
Being an institution of society, the school should support the preservation of the family as the basic social unit and reflect the values of the community, state, and nation in which it functions.
We believe that respect for the well-being of the individual is of paramount importance. Each child is a unique individual who does not learn in the same manner nor at the same rate as others. An individual's total education comprises more than formal schooling; children learn from a variety of influences. All who have influence on children should be concerned about their development as individuals and as members of society. The primary motivating factor in the instructional process is the classroom teacher.
A positive learning environment exists when there is a free and open exchange of ideas. Learners function most effectively when they are personally involved in the learning process, when they have a choice in the establishment of goals and objectives, and when they can be involved in the solving of immediate problems which have meaning in their own lives.
