8500 - FOOD SERVICES
The Board of Education may provide cafeteria facilities in all school facilities where space and facilities permit, and will provide food service for the purchase and consumption of lunch for all students.
The Board shall also provide a breakfast program in accordance with procedures established by the Department of Education.
Lunches sold by the school may be purchased by students and staff members and invited guests in accordance with administrative guidelines established by the Superintendent.
The operation and supervision of the food services program shall be the responsibility of the Superintendent. Food services shall be operated on a self-supporting basis with revenue from students, staff, Federal reimbursement, and surplus food. The Board shall assist the program by furnishing available space, initial major equipment, and utensils. Routine maintenance and replacement of equipment is the responsibility of the program.
A periodic review of the food service accounts shall be made by the Superintendent. Any surplus funds shall be used to reduce the cost of the service to students or to purchase or maintain food service equipment. Surplus funds for ala-carte foods may accrue to the food service program.
The Superintendent shall establish administrative guidelines (A.G. 8500) for the conduct of the school food services program that shall include provisions for:
| A. | the maintenance of sanitary, neat premises free from fire and health hazards; | ||
| B. | the preparation and consumption of food; | ||
| C. | the purchase of foods and supplies in accordance with law; | ||
| D. | the accounting and deposition of food service funds; | ||
| E. | the safekeeping and storage of food and food equipment. |
To help promote optimal health, the Board supports high standards for child and school community nutrition with emphasis on nutritionally adequate meals and snacks that are appealing to students.
The Superintendent shall establish nutrition guidelines (AG 8500) that shall include the following provisions:
| A. | School meals will provide a variety of foods and will be based on the USDA School Meal Patterns. | ||
| B. | Only healthy snacks will be offered on ala carte lines during lunch hours. | ||
| C. | Non-carbonated, lower sugar or vitamin-enriched beverages will be available for students during lunch hours. | ||
| D. | Students will receive adequate time to eat and socialize during lunch time. | ||
| E. | The Food Service Department will offer optional supplemental nutrition education for Grades K-5. | ||
| F. | A committee of students, parents and District staff (administrators, food service professionals and/or teachers) shall be established to review nutritional matters on a periodic basis. | ||
| G. | The use of foods high in fat, sodium and added sugars as a reward or prize for good behavior or exemplary performance shall be discouraged. | ||
| H. | The sale of foods high in fat, sodium and added sugars on school grounds as part of fundraising activities shall be discouraged. Furthermore, no foods or beverages, other than those associated with the District's Food Service program, are to be sold during Food Service hours. Foods and beverages unassociated with the Food Service program may be vended in accordance with Board Policy 8540. |
