8651 - NONROUTINE USE OF SCHOOL BUSES
In accordance with P.A. 187 of the Public Acts of 1990, more specifically Sections 65 and 67, the Board permits the use of its school buses which are not otherwise being used for school purposes or the transportation of non-public students to and from school by a community organization or group for purposes of transporting senior citizens or retired or disabled persons or by a non-profit community organization for purposes of transporting its members to or from an activity, event, or outing provided the trip does not exceed 100 miles one way. To be considered a community organization or group, at least sixty percent (60%) of the participants of the trip shall be residents of the Chippewa Valley Schools.
Any such organization or group must pay the cost of operation for the trip as determined by the Business Department and must submit written quotation for similar service from at least two (2) carriers. The purpose of these quotes are for the school district to determine if suitable or economically feasible public or private transportation is available as is required to be determined by law.
The nonroutine use of buses shall be defined for purposes of this policy as those uses which are specified in State law.
Vehicles must be operated by the holder of a valid bus driver's license and a school bus safety certificate and, when possible by an employee of this District. The cost of transportation shall be reimbursed to the Board in accordance with a formula established in the District's administrative guidelines.
The Superintendent shall develop administrative guidelines which should include provision for insurance coverage and the requirement that for each school bus trip involving school age passengers chaperones will be used to assist the staff member(s) in maintaining passenger control and in enforcing procedures for the safety of all passengers.
