5513 - CARE OF SCHOOL PROPERTY
Basic to the philosophy of the Board of Education is a respect for the rights of others. Students are required to exercise this respect in regard to the belongings of others, including school property. Each student should realize that vandalism to school property is costly to repair and is directly related to increased school taxes.
Attempts will be made to teach students respect for property which can be done in connection with the care of textbooks and the use of school materials and equipment.
Students who cause damage to school property shall be subject to disciplinary measures and restitution for damages.
The Superintendent shall develop procedures to implement this policy which include the requirement that all incidents involving the destruction of property be reported to the Board. The Superintendent may report to the juvenile authorities any student whose damage of school property has been serious or chronic in nature.
The Board authorizes the imposition of fines for the loss, damage, or destruction of school equipment, apparatus, musical instruments, library material, textbooks, and for damage to school property and reserves the right to require payment of such fines prior to a student's participation in co-curricular or extra-curricular programs.
The Board may report to the appropriate juvenile authorities any student whose damage of school property has been serious or chronic in nature.
The Board reserves the right to file a civil action in a court of competent authority against student or parents of a student who maliciously or willfully destroys District property.
The Superintendent shall develop procedures to implement this policy.
