8540 - HEALTHY FOOD AND NUTRITIONAL VENUES

The Board of Education recognizes and acknowledges that "schools cannot achieve their primary mission of education if students and staff are not physically, mentally, and socially healthy." Establishing healthy eating behaviors during the school-age years can make an important contribution to short and long-term disease prevention and health promotion.

The Board believes that schools should provide a campus-wide environment supporting student adoption of healthy eating behaviors. Students should be given the opportunity to learn and practice these behaviors by having access to healthy food and beverage choices.

This policy focuses on one (1) component of a healthy school environment: to ensure that healthful food choices are offered in venues that are within the school/district’s control but outside federally regulated child nutrition programs. These venues include, but are not limited to, vending machines, a-la-carte sales, food rewards, fundraisers, school stores, concessions, school parties, activities, and meetings.

The purpose of this policy is to ensure that students have access to food that meets their nutrient requirements to promote health and foster learning. Food and beverages that complete with this policy’s purpose should be discouraged. Healthy food and beverages that comply with this policy’s purpose shall predominate in all school venues.

The Board, therefore, authorizes the following venues for use in District facilities providing that the following conditions are satisfied.

A.The installation, servicing, stocking, and maintenance of each machine are contracted for with a reputable supplier of vending machines and their products.

B.The District’s share of the revenue is managed by the District in accordance with relevant Board policies and administrative guidelines.

C.No products are vended which would conflict with or contradict information or procedures contained in the District’s educational programs on health and nutrition.

D.No food or beverages are to be sold or distributed which will compete with the District’s food-service program.

The Superintendent shall develop and implement administrative guidelines which will ensure these conditions are adhered to on a continuing basis.
