8760 - STUDENT ACCIDENT INSURANCE
The Board of Education recognizes that students may suffer injuries in the course of attendance at school and participation in the athletic and co-curricular programs of the schools. Accordingly, the Board shall provide such insurance coverage as is authorized by law and will make available to parents insurance coverage at their expense for other contingencies.
The Board will provide parents the opportunity to purchase group insurance coverage, at no cost to the Board, for injury resulting from accidents sustained by students:
| A. | in school, | ||
| B. | on school grounds, | ||
| C. | at an activity sponsored by the school, | ||
| D. | while traveling between home and school, and | ||
| E. | in any activity round-the-clock. |
Participation shall be voluntary.
The Superintendent shall:
| A. | recommend suitable and qualified insurance carriers for Board consideration, | ||
| B. | notify all parents of District students of the availability of group insurance, and | ||
| C. | appoint an administrator for the program and ensure that the administration of the program including notice to parents, collection of premiums, and filing of claims interferes as little as possible with the educational program and the classroom activity of teachers. |
The Board requires that students participating in interscholastic school athletics be covered by some type of accident insurance. The insurance may be the accident policy which has been approved by the Board or a similar policy type acquired elsewhere by the student or his/her parents. If the latter choice is made an insurance release card must be signed by the participant and parent or guardian.
