5540 - THE SCHOOLS AND LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES

The Board of Education is committed to protect children from individuals not associated with the school system but also recognizes its responsibility to cooperate with law enforcement agencies.

When law enforcement agencies request permission to interrogate a student at school, the principal shall attempt to inform the student's parents.

Whenever the principal has determined that the law enforcement agencies have a legitimate purpose in interrogating a student within the confines of a school building, the principal or representative shall be present throughout the proceedings.

When a law enforcement agency requests permission to arrest a student at school, the principal shall inform the Superintendent.

No child shall be released to a law enforcement agency without proper warrant or written parental permission, except in the event of emergency or for the protection of life or property as determined by the principal.
