2520 - LIBRARY/MEDIA CENTERS

 A.Purpose of Library/Media Centers
  The purpose of the library/media centers is to retain materials for the enhancement of information, interest and enlightenment. The Board of Education adopts the following Bill of Rights for Media/Library Centers adapted from the American Library Association Library Bill of Rights and the School Library Bill of Rights:

  1.The school library/media center should provide books and other materials presenting all points of view concerning the problems and issues of our times.

  2.The responsibility of the school library/media center is:

   a.to provide a comprehensive collection of instructional materials selected in compliance with basic written selection principles, and to provide maximum accessibility to these materials.

   b.to provide materials that will support the curriculum, taking into consideration individual needs and varied interests and abilities of the students served.

   c.to provide materials for teachers and students that will encourage growth in knowledge, and that will develop literary, cultural, and aesthetic appreciation and ethical awareness.

   d.to provide materials which reflect the ideas and beliefs of divergent groups and their contributions to the world heritage and culture, thereby enabling students to develop an intellectual integrity in forming judgments.

  3.Libraries should resist censorship and protect free expression and free access to ideas while still respecting the rights of people to question specific material.

  4.In no case should library materials be excluded because of the race, nationality, social, political, or religious views of the authors.

 B.Responsibility for Selection
  Responsibility for the selection of materials is vested in the Board. Implementation of the selection process is delegated to the administration of the school system, the principal of each school, and the certified library/media specialist in charge of each center. The actual selection shall be delegated to the library/media specialist with input from subject area teachers. Recommendations from teachers, students, and other individuals should be encouraged.

 C.Procedures for Reevaluation
  A procedure for processing and responding to criticism of materials shall be established by the Superintendent. This process should include a formal signed complaint on a standard format and reviewed by appointed committees to reevaluate the material in question.
