2280 - VALUES EDUCATION
The Board of Education believes that the future of our democratic society depends on mature students who have learned to accept responsibility for choices, respect human dignity, care about others, seek peaceful resolution of conflict, demonstrate integrity, and assume social responsibility. The District must contribute to the development of students who will help to ensure the existence of a just and caring society.
In order to achieve the aforesaid goal, the Board directs the Superintendent to:
| A. | renew the commitment to promoting values education in the schools and to make that commitment a powerful, unifying force in the curriculum; | ||
| B. | form a partnership with parents and the greater community to create a social and cultural context that supports the school's efforts to develop mature citizens; | ||
| C. | define and teach commonly accepted community values; | ||
| D. | extend values education beyond the classroom to encompass the total school climate enabling students not only to know what is good, but also to prize and to do what is good; | ||
| E. | include in values education socialization into appropriate patterns of conduct and education for the critical thinking and decision making that are part of adult maturity; | ||
| F. | continually examine the institutional features of school life to ensure that climate and instructional practices contribute to values education; | ||
| G. | continually research what works in values education and integrate those findings into the schools; | ||
| H. | regularly assess the climate of the schools and the conduct of students and communicate the results of these assessments by such methods as notations about student conduct on report cards, notes of praise or criticism to parents, and public recognition for individuals or groups whose conduct is praiseworthy; | ||
| I. | establish and convey clear expectations for teachers and administrators regarding their roles as values educators; | ||
| J. | provide teacher in-service on the subject of values education to ensure that teachers have the necessary knowledge and skills to fulfill their responsibilities. |
