5112 - ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
The Board of Education believes that the vocational programs of the District should be available to as many qualified and interested young people as existing resources will allow.
All students are eligible for admission providing they meet the requirements of the particular program in which they wish to enroll.
Students who are considered to be bona fide residents of communities or areas which are part of the taxing area of the District may participate tuition free.
Students who are enrolled at a participating local district as nonresident students shall pay tuition at the rate charged by the participating local district.
Graduate Student Policy
After May 1st of each year, present home school junior students may apply for acceptance into any two (2) year program which is undersubscribed on that date. Undersubscribed programs shall mean those programs which have not reached the maximum enrollment as defined by either the State Department of Education, other state agencies and boards or by the vocational school due to the size of the lab and/or the available equipment.
Upon acceptance into one of the school's two (2) year programs, the senior will be placed in the junior section of the program unless other circumstances in the student's background dictate a senior level placement. This determination shall be made by the administrator with input from the vocational instructors of the program.
After completion of his/her senior year (the first year of a two (2) year program) and graduation from the home high school, the student may elect to apply to take the second year of his/her program. The student must remain in his/her program area and cannot change to a different area (i.e. Auto Mechanics to Auto Body). Any student wishing to apply for the second year of a two (2) year program must submit a written application to the administrator by June 1st of the year in which s/he graduates.
Upon acceptance into the second year of the program the student will be assessed a tuition fee established by the Superintendent plus a set amount for the average cost of supplies for that program. All fees must be paid by October 1st of the second year. Non-payment of the fees will result in removal from the program.
In addition, as they will be involved in the same activities as the high school students, all graduate students must abide by the rules and regulations of the high school conduct code. Students violating the code will be subject to disciplinary action and the possible removal from the program with no refund.
ADMISSION
Residence Requirements
A student, to be eligible to attend the JVS, must reside in the planning district with his/her parents. Seniors whose parents move from the county during the second semester of their senior year will be permitted to continue in the vocational school until the end of the year. Any student whose parents move from the District during the sixty-day period preceding the last day of the school year will be permitted to continue in the vocational school for the remainder of that year.
ADULT STUDENT POLICY
The Ashtabula County Joint Vocational School Board of Education has set forth the following policy regarding adult students who regularly attend the high school day programs:
Any adult student (a student who has reached the age of eighteen (18) at any time before s/he completes his/her program at the Vo-Ed) must register with the Administrative office at the time s/he turns eighteen (18).
Adults students shall observe and follow ALL rules which pertain to all other students attending the vocational school. This includes bringing a note from the parent or head of household where the adult student resides in the case of absence. Adult students must also bring a note from parents or head of household in the event of an early dismissal. As with all students, adult students will be required to bring written proof of any doctor or dentist appointment to the Administrative Office the day immediately following the dismissal.
Applications
Students desiring to enroll in the vocational school should obtain application materials from their home school guidance counselor or from the JVS Counseling Center. Placement of students in vocational courses is made on the basis of scholastic record, interest in a vocation, ability to profit from vocational instruction, and recommendations of the home school and vocational school staff. Placement in programs is accomplished without regard to race, sex, disability, or national origin.
