5512 - TOBACCO-FREE ENVIRONMENT

The Board is committed to providing students, staff, and visitors with a tobacco-free environment. The negative health effects of tobacco use for both users and nonusers, particularly in connection with second hand smoke, are well established. Further, providing a tobacco-free environment is consistent with the role-modeling responsibilities of teachers and staff for our students.

Students may not use, possess, distribute, or sell tobacco products on school property, at school-sponsored events, at school bus stops, or on school buses. This includes any facility leased or contracted for by the Board including, but not limited to, practice fields, playgrounds, football fields, baseball fields, softball fields, pool areas, soccer fields, tennis courts, and all open areas.

For purposes of this policy, "tobacco products" means cigars, cigarettes, pipe tobacco, smokeless tobacco, chewing tobacco, snuff, or any other matter or substances that contain tobacco, and papers used to roll cigarettes.

The Board also prohibits the use of electronic, "vapor," or other substitute forms of cigarettes, clove cigarettes, or other smoking devices.

The Board directs the Superintendent to develop administrative procedures designed to provide evidenced-based curricula regarding health hazards of the use of tobacco products to students as part of in-school and after-school programs.
