5230.01 - GRANTING PERMISSION FOR STUDENTS TO LEAVE THE SCHOOL CAMPUS

No student shall be permitted to leave the school grounds during the school day for school business/activities without the principal's prior approval and written consent from the student's parent. The principal, teacher, or office personnel shall definitely establish the identity and authority of any person who requests the release of a student from school.

A.Either parent who resides in the District may obtain the release of the student from school.

B.The school may also release the student to a person whose name is listed on the Student Data and Emergency Card (Form 5341 F1), or who is otherwise authorized by the student's parent. Regardless of the marital status of the parents (i.e. married, separated, divorced or unwed), either parent may complete the form and list the names of person(s) to whom the school is authorized to release the student.
However, in the event a Parenting Plan approved by a court designates one parent as having the sole decision-making authority for the academic and educational needs of the children, that parent will have the sole authority to change the form.
District staff shall not modify the names on the form at any time. Telephone numbers can be updated on the form by office staff upon written signed request by the parent.

C.Persons on the Student Data and Emergency Card are not entitled to access to confidential student records or information unless they are a "parent" as defined in Board Policy 0100, Definitions.

D.The provisions above shall not apply to a law enforcement officer, court officials, other authorized agency officials, or a school employee who is authorized by the principal, provided that the person's identity and authority are clearly established.

Parents Living Outside the District

A student will not be released to a parent who resides outside of the District without the verified permission of the parent of the student who resides in the District. However, when a student who resides in another district is attending the schools of this District on an approved zoning exception, the student will be released to a parent with whom the student resides.

Unresolved Disputes Between Parents

In the event of an unresolved dispute between parents regarding the release of the child from school, resulting in a disturbance at school, the principal shall contact law enforcement authorities.

Emergencies

Notwithstanding any other provision of this policy, in an emergency situation which constitutes an imminent threat to student health or safety, school personnel may take whatever action is necessary under the circumstances to protect students.
