5451.01 - WISCONSIN ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE SCHOLARSHIP

Wisconsin's Academic Excellence Scholarship is a State supported program, jointly administered by the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) and the Higher Education Aids Board (HEAB). The program offers scholarship recipients an exemption from specified tuition and fees for post high school education at eligible higher education institutions in Wisconsin.

The following standards must be met to qualify for the Academic Excellence Scholarships. The student and alternates must:

 A.be a resident of the United States who is either a U.S. citizen or an alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence;

 B.be a Wisconsin resident as defined in 36.27 Wis. Stats.;

 C.have achieved senior status and have been in attendance for four (4) consecutive semesters during their sophomore, junior, and senior year(s);

 D.must be selected based on the Grade Point Average (GPA) on the students official transcript as of the last day of the semester which ended just prior to February 15th.

The grade point average (GPA) computation will be in accord with School Board Policy 5430 - Class Rank. In selecting the scholarship recipient(s) for the Academic Excellence Scholarship, unweighted grades for seven (7) semesters will be used to compute grade point averages.

Students enrolled under the Chapter 220 Program and full-time public school Open-Enrollment Program who qualify based on the standards identified above are eligible for the Academic Excellence Scholarship in the school they actually attend.

The scholarship(s) will be awarded to the qualifying student(s) with the highest grade point average.

Tiebreaker Procedures

Rationale: In keeping with the spirit of the scholarship program as determined by the Department of Public Instruction and the Higher Educational Aids Board, the Adams-Friendship Area School District Board of Education agrees to designate students for these scholarships as defined by Wisconsin Statute 39.41 (lm)(a). This tiebreaker procedure will act as the official guideline for determining recipients of this award if a tie does, in fact, occur in any given year. These guidelines will be put into effect when school officials have determined that two (2) or more students have identical grade point averages in all subjects taken for credit after seven (7) semesters in grades 9-12. The student must have attended Adams-Friendship High School for five (5) full semesters.

If two (2) or more students have the same grade point average the following criteria, in rank order, will be used to determine the eligible student(s):

 A.has applied, and will attend, a Wisconsin postsecondary institution. Students attending out-of-state schools forfeit scholarship consideration. This must be decided by February 1st of their senior year

 B.has the highest American College Test (ACT) or converted SAT composite score at the end of the seventh semester. This score must be in the guidance department by the end of seven (7) semesters to be considered. Students not taking the ACT or SAT forfeit scholarship consideration. If a student has taken the exam more than once, then the highest composite score received will be considered

 C.has the highest total number of academic credits in the core areas of English, foreign language, math, science, and social studies

 D.place the student’s name into a closed container and the School Board president or designee picks the recipients and alternates. Alternates will be determined by the order student’s names are drawn from the container.
