4120.11 - PARAEDUCATOR STANDARDS
The Adams-Friendship Board of Education recognizes that it is vital to the successful operation of the District that positions created by the Board are filled with qualified and competent support staff. Towards this end, the Board of Education has adopted the following standards for those individuals employed as paraeducators within the district.
Standard 1: Interpersonal Relations
The paraeducator is able to work as a collaborative team member and resolve conflicts in a positive manner.
Standard 2: Content Knowledge
The paraeducator understands the content taught in reading, writing, and mathematics.
Standard 3: Educational Psychology
The paraeducator has the basic understanding of the stages of child development as well as how children learn.
Standard 4: Learning Styles
The paraeducator has the competence to deliver a lesson to individuals or small groups of students following teacher instruction with minimal assistance.
Standard 5: Classroom Management
The paraeducator understands and supports the teacher's classroom management system and is able to use it in motivating students to create a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, self-motivation, as well as active engagement in learning.
Standard 6: Communication
The paraeducator uses effective and efficient communication skills to foster collaborative and supportive interaction in the classroom.
Standard 7: Assessment
The paraeducator understands the different types of assessment utilized in the classroom and effectively assists in administering those assessments.
Standard 8: Self-Evaluation
The paraeducator is a reflective practitioner who continually evaluates the effects of their choices and actions on students, parents, professionals and others in the learning community and who actively seeks out opportunities to grow professionally.
Standard 9: Community Connectivity
The paraeducator displays respect for cultural diversity and respects the views of others. They act with integrity and fairness and in an ethical manner.
