2433 - EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
In addition to interscholastic athletics, the Board of Education believes that the District's extra-curricular programs should include, in addition to intramural athletics, other types of activities which contribute to the growth and development of students but are indirectly related to the District's curriculum or school improvement process.
The purpose of such extra-curricular activities should be to:
| A. | help students learn to use leisure time productively; | ||
| B. | promote leadership skills; | ||
| C. | increase positive social interaction and working relationships. |
District-Sponsored Activities
Each year the Board shall sponsor extra-curricular activities recommended by the Superintendent. It will provide facilities and equipment, when and as appropriate, and arrange for faculty advisors to supervise the planning and conduct of the activities.
The Superintendent shall develop and implement administrative guidelines to ensure that the planning, conduct, and evaluation of all extra-curricular activities are in compliance with equal opportunity laws, Board policies, and District guidelines.
Students are to be informed of all extra-curricular activities and the requirements for participation. No student shall be denied the opportunity to participate because of the financial inability to pay necessary participation fees.
Professional staff members may be employed as advisors by means of a supplemental contract based on the recommendation of the principal and subject to the approval of the Superintendent.
District-Sanctioned Activities
In addition to extra-curricular activities it sponsors, the Board may, from time to time, choose to sanction certain activities which are not part of the regular extra-curricular program of the District but which can benefit those students who wish to participate. In sanctioning an activity, the Board is approving of the concept but shall not:
| A. | assume any responsibility for its planning, conduct, or evaluation; | ||
| B. | provide any funds or other resources; | ||
| C. | allow any member of the District's staff to assist in the planning, conduct, or evaluation of the activity during the hours s/he is functioning as a member of the staff. |
The Board may make facilities available in accordance with its Policy 7510, Use of Facilities.
No organization may use the name of the District or any other name which would associate the activity with the District without the consent of the Board. Requests for such consent must be submitted to the Superintendent and receive his/her recommendation prior to consideration by the Board.
