8660 - TRANSPORTATION BY PRIVATE VEHICLE
The School Board authorizes the transportation by private vehicle of students of the District.
Any such transportation must be approved in advance and in writing by the principal in accordance with the Superintendent's administrative procedures. The principal or designee, prior to approving a private vehicle to transport students for school-sponsored groups, including athletic events, shall verify that the driver of the vehicle is an adult and has a valid Florida drivers license; require the owner to show evidence of adequate insurance in force on the vehicle prior to and during the time it is used to transport students; verify and keep on file the owner's insurance information; and/or verify and keep on file a statement that the vehicle is designed to transport ten (10) or fewer passengers and meets all federal motor safety standards for passenger cars.
The parent of the participating student will be given, on request, the name of the driver and the description of the vehicle.
No person shall be approved for the transportation of students in a private vehicle who is not the holder of a currently-valid license to operate a motor vehicle.
No person shall be permitted to transport students unless they hold automobile liability and personal injury insurance in the amount required by District administrative procedures. The Superintendent may withdraw the authorization of any private vehicle driver whose insurance is not adequate.
Any private vehicle used for the transportation of students must be owned by the approved driver or the spouse of the approved driver and must conform to registration requirements of the state.
When transportation is authorized in a privately owned vehicle, students may only be transported in designated seating positions. Also, students shall be required to use the occupant crash protection system (seat belt, shoulder harness, etc.) provided by the manufacturer.
The responsibility of professional staff members for the discipline and control of students will extend to their transportation of students in a private vehicle. Drivers who are not professional staff members are requested to report student misconduct to the principal
