2280 - PHYSICAL EDUCATION

The School Board recognizes the value of physical education to the maintenance of the health and vitality of all students, as well as to the development of life-long habits that will enhance personal fitness and wellness. The outcomes of the physical education program in this District shall stress physical fitness and encourage the development of a healthy, active lifestyle. Specific grade level outcomes shall be established annually and be consistent with state standards and benchmarks. Furthermore, one-on-one counseling concerning the benefits of physical education is available to students.

It is the responsibility of each Board to develop a physical education program that stresses physical fitness and encourages healthy, active lifestyles, and to encourage all students in pre-kindergarten through grade 12 to participate in physical education (F.S. 1003.455(1)). Physical education shall consist of physical activities of at least a moderate intensity level and for a duration sufficient to provide a significant health benefit to students, subject to the differing capabilities of students.

Goals

The District strives to provide a developmentally appropriate, safe, supportive, and structured learning environment in which all students can experience success. The physical education program will address and enhance the motor, cognitive, and interpersonal skills as well as the fitness abilities of each student, as indicated by state standards. Students will have a better understanding of health issues and the skills and attitudes that will enable them to make informed decisions for a healthy, active lifestyle now and in the future.

Program Outcomes

The District follows a standards-based physical education curriculum using state standards for planning, instructing, and evaluating student progress.

The physically educated student will:

 A.Demonstrate competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities;

 B.Identify, analyze, and evaluate movement concepts, mechanical principles, safety considerations, and strategies/tactics regarding movement performance in a variety of physical activities;

 C.Develop and implement a personal fitness program to achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical fitness;

 D.Exhibit responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical activity settings;

 E.Value physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and/or social interaction;

 F.Wear appropriate dress for physical education class/activities and participate regularly in physical activity of moderate intensity.

Program Requirements

 A.Physical education teachers will work cooperatively with parents, physicians, guidance counselors, and administrators to design/adapt physical activities to meet the needs of all students;

 B.For students K-5, 150 minutes per week of structured physical activity will be provided in increments of no less than thirty (30) minutes each according to F.S. 1003.455(3);

 C.For students in grades 6-8, the District requires the equivalent of one (1) class period per day of physical education for one (1) semester of each year. Waiver options are available for students prior to scheduling a student in physical education;

 D.For safety and social issues (e.g., bullying) dodgeball will no longer be permitted;

 E.Physical activity and physical education time shall not be withheld as a punishment or used as a punishment.
